Prepare your car for winter before the first frost
Tyres, visibility, fluids and starting: a practical preparation plan for winter journeys around Warsaw and further afield.

Plan around the journeys you expect
Start before cold weather arrives, leaving time to address any faults found. A Warsaw commute and a journey on snowy rural roads call for different preparation and time allowances. List your winter plans, next scheduled service and existing symptoms. A seasonal check complements the maintenance schedule; it does not postpone work already due.
Check tyre suitability, condition and pressure
Assess the tyres for expected conditions, remaining tread, damage and uneven wear. Winter and all-season tyres bearing 3PMSF have verified snow-performance characteristics, but suitability still depends on routes and weather. Consider the benefit of dedicated winter tyres for severe conditions. For an overseas trip, check current requirements in official sources for each country on your route.
Falling temperatures can reduce pressure. Measure cold tyres and use the vehicle placard or manual values for the load carried. The tyre sidewall number does not replace those recommendations. Do not wait for a pressure warning. If one wheel repeatedly loses air, investigate the cause rather than only inflating it again.
Restore visibility before dirty roads test it
Check wipers, washers, demisting and heated glass. Use suitable winter washer fluid before freezing weather, accounting for remaining summer fluid and the product instructions. Check lights and clean the inside of the windows. Report persistent misting, especially with weaker airflow. Do not operate frozen wiper blades until the ice has been safely removed.
Choose fluids by the required specification
Ask for cooling-system condition and coolant freeze protection to be checked. Topping up needs a compatible product specified for the car; colour is insufficient. Do not mix unidentified fluids or guess concentration. Engine oil must also meet the correct requirements. Winter alone does not justify an arbitrary viscosity change or additive.
Address starting, braking and handling symptoms
If cranking is already slower, the battery has discharged or warnings have appeared, discuss electrical checks. Report braking vibration, pulling, knocks and uneven tyre wear separately. These require assessment of the relevant components. A seasonal visit is a useful opportunity, but significant deterioration in braking or handling cannot wait for that date.
Allow time before setting off
- Clear snow and ice from windows, mirrors, lights, the roof and sensor areas.
- Prepare a scraper, brush, gloves and suitable washer fluid; make roadside equipment accessible.
- Check the forecast and road conditions, charge your phone and save an assistance contact.
- Restore a complete view before moving and allow extra journey time.
Keep the inspection findings and agreed work list. Preparation should leave you with a clear understanding of the car’s condition. Tyres and servicing cannot replace adjusting speed and following distance to the actual grip and visibility.
